Alice Wilkes Film Evaluation

Film extract Evaluation

From watching our completed extract I am happy with the end result. The genre that we were working with was drama, which hugely influenced the decisions that we all made throughout the process and instead of choosing certain things because we liked them, we chose things that would suit the extract and hopefully enhance it. The cinematography, the editing and the sound were all chosen carefully so that they would all suit each other. I found that we, as a group achieved that. ‘My Sisters Keeper’ that is a drama about two sisters influenced a lot of our ideas; this influenced my choice in adjusting the colours within certain shots especially those that were flashbacks and the cinematography. With the cinematography we wanted to have parts of the flash backs where it was obvious the camera was hand held. This did however cause some difficulties when it came to editing and found there was a lot of filming that we wanted to cut, as some parts were too jolty. I, as editor, reduced the speed of most clips, some more than others, depending on how unstable the filming looked. This not only made the cinematography look more controlled yet it gave an impact on the flashbacks, which I found helped a lot.

Being the editor I found I had a lot of ideas in what I wanted to do. I changed the colours within each shot separately, making the scenes in the hospital dull and saturated then making the flash backs bright and colourful so they were almost dream like. I found that most times I watched the extract I kept finding things I wanted to change or to take out. I put a dissolve tool in between some shots but found I had some difficulty with so I decided to fade some instead out using a pen tool and smoothing it out which looked neater yet just as if not more effective.

(Flash back; bright colours) (Hospital; Dull saturated colours)

Our group worked well together and agreed on almost everything. We all helped out with each role and put forward our ideas to create a better end result. We communicated well and all had an open mind about what other members of the group had to say which helped a lot when a member left or was not there, as we knew what they would have been doing.

I had some ideas that I definitely wanted to use, for example reducing the speed of the flashbacks. When it came to adjusting the colour settings I found that it was more trial and error, I would try different things and used the one that looked best and I am extremely happy with what I chose. We changed the ending of the extract due to difficulties in filming. We also took out a shot at the end where it zooms out from the necklace to show an empty bed, as we found it wasn’t needed. Also a lot of the shots we reduced hugely as some went on for a lot longer and it would lose the attention of the audience. We were thinking about having a voice over as we realised that it seemed difficult for the audience to see which character was having the flash back but we found the soundtrack made was more effective.

I think that from the feedback we have received we have managed to create a very good piece. My main worry was if the attention of the audience would be kept throughout the whole thing yet with the chosen flashbacks and the editing combined with sound it worked well and the attention was not lost. We got feedback from Jake Wynne who is a short film director and editor who also said that some parts were too long and not needed as they lose the audiences attention. Feedback throughout the process helped a lot and made me realise that as an editor it is best to watch it as if you’ve never watched it before and put yourself in an audiences situation, as I found myself cutting out bits that although didn’t change much for me did for an audience. For example the beginning of the extract from I think it should show more from the hospital scene yet we could not change that as we had not got enough filming to do so.

I think that my technical skills grew when we made the extract and as at the beginning where I would use simple techniques I got more used to the equipment and found myself growing more confident and trying more things. I do however think that if I was more confident and comfortable with the effects I was working with I would have been able to do better, however I am very happy with what I have done as an editor and the end result and feel as though we worked our hardest and put all of our skills into the extract to get the best result.

Rebecca Jarvis Film Evaluation

I think that overall, our film went quite well. We decided to try to create an opening sequence to a drama. We were quite heavily influenced by the film My Sister’s Keeper (Nick Cassavetes 2009) in which a young girl is born through IVF to save her terminally ill sister’s life but sues her parents for the rights to her own body. We adapted this where one sister, Holly, dies right at the beginning and we would follow the second sister, Rose, attempting to battle through the grief of Holly’s tragic death throughout the rest of the film. We used a similar idea for our opening as My Sister’s Keeper’s opening scene. It uses a series of flashbacks, which look like home movies, which was where we got the idea for ours from.

This Youtube video shows a clip from the opening scene of My Sister’s Keeper. We liked the idea of making it look like a home video and tried to re create this in our film by not using a tripod for some of the flashbacks. This gave us the effect we were looking for however I think that in some shots it is too shaky and it is slightly distracting from what is actually happening. This is also where we got the idea of changing the intensity of the colours, which helped separate the flashbacks from the hospital scenes.

My main role in the group was to manage sound but as one member of our group left, all 4 areas were split between just 2 of us, so I also took part with some cinematography and the directing. The first and last scene was shot to look like a hospital and i decided to just have diegetic sound during these scenes to create a more realistic atmosphere. However, I had a problem trying to find any hospital related sound effects. I had to try and re create a hospital atmosphere by using other sound effects and layering them on top of each other. Some of the sound effects I used were called Hairdryer, Rocket Doors Closing and Baby Crying. Although these sounds are not related to a hospital in any way (with the exception of Baby Crying) together they worked well and created the correct atmosphere that we were looking for in these scenes.

During the flashbacks I thought it would be good if the music was quite relaxing and simple. I created a track on GarageBand which was a simple acoustic guitar plucking but I think it worked well, was very effective with the footage and I got the response I was looking for when others watched our film. However I think I could have made a better soundtrack if I had more time as I personally think it is a bit repetitive and we spent a lot more time editing rather than producing the soundtrack.

We had a few problems while editing as we realised after watching our footage, in the hospital scene we recorded the wrong bits and so we had a bit of trouble whilst trying to edit it. Because of this we lost some of the shots that we had planned but we cut up the accidental footage we had filmed instead and managed to slow it down so it would cover a decent time length.

We tried to make it clear that it was told through flashbacks by putting a video filter on to change the colours and saturation of the video. For the flashbacks we enhanced the colours of the image and for the parts that aren’t flashbacks. We made the colours very dull and miserable which also reflected the emotions in the film at that specific time. I really liked this effect and I think it worked well and it was obvious that they were flashbacks, which I thought would be a possible problem.

Dull colours:

When Jake Wynne (Director and Editor) came in to talk to us he gave us some really good productive feedback about our film. He suggested that we add a voice over into it, which we were thinking about doing anyway, to ensure people knew that they were flashbacks and what was happening. We eventually decided against it as we thought it was quite obvious what were flashbacks because of the colour change and we also did not really have enough time after the idea was suggested to complete Normal.dotm 0 0 1 88 502 LR6FC 4 1 616 12.0 this. However I think a voice over would have been a good idea because, if we wrote it well, it would have made our film more emotional which was the intended idea of it. He also gave us some positive feedback and told us what he thought was good about our film. He told us he liked how we have shown the flashbacks. He also liked the clip with the shadows and thought it was a good way to help portray the relationship between the two sisters. He also told us that the music went well with the clip and it helped make it more emotional.

Overall I think the creating process for our film went quite well and our end result was good. Our film is typical of it's genre and we got the response we wanted from other viewers.

We looked through the soundtrack from my sisters keeper but couldn't find a suitable song for the flash backs. We found that this song would fit with the flash backs as it is a slow song.

This video 7 seconds in shows flash back and the type of effect we want to create in the flash backs.

In the flash backs we want to use soft colouring and possibly put it into slow motion. In some of them we thought about making it look as though they were home video's with a hand held camera.

In part of the flash backs it will show that Holly is opening a present from Rose which will be a piece of jewelery that Holly will be wearing in the first hospital scene. When Rose is by herself in the hospital she will be holding that piece of jewelery.

All of our filming will be done in college and in lesson time which does limit the location yet in the majority of our flash backs they don't include a particular set. For the hospital scenes we are going to be using the college medical room and are aiming to use camera angles in order to hide things that may show that we're not in a hospital room.

Rose

Our story line is based on two sisters with a close relationship. Rose, the older sister of seventeen is the main character of the film and shows her struggle to overcome the death of Holly her younger sister of fifteen, which occurs at the beginning of the film.

Our 2-3 minute clip of the film will be the opening scene of rose's sister dieing. It will be set in a hospital room and will show flash backs of her and her sister. At the end of the scene Rose will be sitting next to an empty hospital bed.
